3MW hydro scheme in Wester Ross gains approval

Thursday 11th October, 2007

Scottish Ministers have approved RWE Npowers plans for the Inverlael hydro electric development, a 3MW run of river hydro scheme to the south of Ullapool in Wester Ross.

ASH design + assessment undertook an Environmental Impact Assessment and project managed the production of the Environmental Statement, providing specialist landscape and visual, land use, recreation and planning inputs. ASH co-ordinated various inputs from specialist subconsultants on birds, habitats and animals, electrofishing, fresh water pearl mussels, cultural heritage, noise and vibration.

ASH advised Npower during the development of the design to minimise any adverse environmental impacts resulting from the scheme.

The Environmental Statement accompanied the Section 36 Application in January 2005. Consent was given by Scottish Ministers in summer 2007 and construction is programmed to start in 2008.

About the hydroelectric scheme

The 3MW run-of-river scheme is located to the south east of Loch Broom, Wester Ross, within the catchments of the River Lael and Allt Mor. The proposal comprises two intakes on upland burns, a series of associated buried pipes to convey the water to a new powerhouse, two pipe bridges, a substation located within the powerhouse building and the construction of temporary and permanent access tracks.
