The scheme, one of the biggest canal restoration projects in Europe, has brought the 110km of canal from Glasgow to Edinburgh, back to life.

The Falkirk Wheel Project

The 35 metre high Falkirk Wheel is the world's first rotating boat lift and dramatically connects the routes and levels of the two Canals at the Falkirk Interchange. The giant wheel with caissons of water, transfers barges from one level to another in approximately 15 minutes.

The project was awarded the Saltire Civil Engineering Award in 2002, selected as a project advancing the art of civil engineering in Scotland.

Millennium Link Falkirk Wheel Planning & Development

ASH has had a multi-faceted role in this prestigious project, working for Morrison Bachy Soletanch as:

  • Masterplanners
  • Landscape architects
  • Environmental management systems auditors

ASH also carried out an Environmental Impact Assessment for the development to provide in-house landscape, visual and ecological expertise and co-ordinating specialist inputs from archaeologists and noise consultants.

As landscape masterplanners, ASH ensured that once inside the site, car and coach parking would be hidden from view in clearings within an area of planting, so as not to detract from the wheel experience. The development was opened by the Queen in summer 2002.
