The northern slopes of Aonach Mor had been recognised as a potential ski area since the early 1970's. In recognition of their work at Cairngorm and other locations dealing with development in sensitive environments, ASH design + assessment prepared a Best Practice Handbook for the Nevis Range ski area development entitled 'Development and Environmental Management for Scottish Skiing Areas'.

In 1986, ASH prepared a development and management plan for Aonach Mor and submitted it for detailed planning later that year. The application was approved and construction of the resort began.
The Nevis Range ski area development is acknowledged as a fine example of a well designed and managed project sited in an extremely fragile and sensitive environment.
