ASH were appointed as design consultants for the Congleton Town Park conservation and restoration project

Town Park, a 19th Century design by Edward Kemp, comprises an invaluable local asset enjoyed by townsfolk and visitors to Congleton. Situated on a meander of the River Dane, the design makes most of a dramatic woodland escarpment that frames the main body of the park and its associated facilities and affords access to intimate woodland walks.

What we did

Following a successful Stage 1 Heritage Lottery application, the Borough Council appointed ASH to review the initial Town Park proposals and prepare second-stage detailed design proposals.

In addition to proposals focused on conservation and restoration of the original design concept and detail, the development plan included recommendations for restoration of more contemporary features including:

  • Park pavilion
  • Bandstand
  • Play area
  • Bowling green
  • Formal Coronation Garden

Additional funding to that identified in the Stage 1 plan was sought and approved. The park is also currently under consideration for Grade II listing by English Heritage.

The restoration work was finally completed in 2007.
