What we did

The works were undertaken in one phase and included the construction of a new glazed street, created from linking the internal courtyards with the existing reception area, running the full height of the building.

Externally all existing car parking areas were to be maintained and resurfaced and a new public space was to be provided around the entrance area to create an arrival point for visitors and an environment for staff use as well as enhancing the building’s appearance from the road and uniting the internal and external spaces of the refurbished building.

The drop-off area was moved further away from the building to provide a pedestrian open space for staff with sheltered seating areas divided up by soft landscaping. A number of sculptures were relocated to this area. A dramatic flight of new external steps and an avenue of pleached semi-mature lime trees provide access to the north car park, and a disabled ramp allows access to the entry level of the building.

A number of trees/hedges in the car park area were protected by Tree Preservation Orders (T.P.O.’s) and the design required full consultation with the Planning Department with impacts minimised. An inventory of existing vegetation was presented in plan form indicating species approximate location and extent. Poor specimens were highlighted together with T.P.O locations.
